2 Meaning & Sentences  Meaning : lost forever; wasted; gone  During the Depression huge fortunes went down the drain.  No drugs down the drain.

3 Origin  In some places, water is more important than oil or gold. Without water, crops can’t grow and people can’t live. Once water goes down the drain, it’s gone and cannot be retrieved. Today we say that anything precious that’s been wasted or lost has gone “ down the drain.”

6 Dialogue  Hello, Sissi. How are you doing?  How can I help you? You have so much to do?  Oh! it’s easy. It means “lost or wasted; disappearing”.  Sure! As you know, California is in serious drought now. We can not afford to let water go down the drain.  I am as busy as a bee. We are busy preparing group presentation and writing US company reports.
