Project Wisdom Getting your z-z-zs SSMS News & Announcements Project Wisdom #4 9/11/13

Good morning, South Seminole. This is Ms. Taylor, Academic Dean, with a few words of wisdom. Someone wise once said that: If people were meant to pop out of bed, we'd all sleep in toasters.* Getting up in the morning can be difficult, but it’s much easier if you get a good night’s sleep. Experts say that teenagers need at least eight and a half hours of sleep. One study shows that students who get plenty of sleep perform better at school. And if you think about it, doesn't it make sense that getting plenty of sleep helps your attitude?

With something to think about, this is Ms. Taylor. Make it a great day… or not. The choice is yours. Without enough sleep, we all become tall two-year-olds. Today, take a little time to think about the importance of sleep to your health and well-being. Making a promise to yourself to get plenty of sleep will improve your grades and your relationships.

Learning Goal: Students will understand the importance of sleep to their health and well being.

 With a show of hands, how many of you have a hard time getting up in the morning?  How many have a difficult time going to sleep at night?  How many of you believe that sleep is a waste of time?

 Do you agree with JoJo Jensen’s quote, “Without enough sleep, we all become tall two-year olds”? Why or why not? How might being sleep deprived negatively affect your performance at school? Can you give examples?

deprive : to take something away paraphrase : write in your own words performance : the way something works

 Experts say that teenagers need at least eight and a half hours of sleep. One study shows that students who get plenty of sleep perform better at school.  And if you think about it, it also makes sense that getting plenty of sleep helps your attitude and your relationships, because when we are sleep deprived, we all tend to be less attentive and more short tempered.  1. Read the quote below and paraphrase it. What does it mean to you personally? Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together. ~ Thomas Dekker _______________________________________________________________ \_______________________________________________________________________________

. In a recent study, scientists discovered that students who got fewer than eight hours of sleep were more forgetful and had trouble paying attention and learning new lessons. Does this make sense to you? Why or why not? Can you give an example of a time when this happened to you? ______________________________________________________________

 When we are sleep deprived, we tend to be less patient, more quick-tempered, and less attentive to others. How does making a commitment to getting plenty of sleep build character?  How does making a commitment to getting plenty of sleep help us become more caring toward others and responsible with our schoolwork? _________________________________________________ _______________________________________________ ________________________________________________

Closing Thoughts- Sleep is important to your health and well-being. Teenagers need at least eight and a half hours of sleep. Getting plenty of sleep will improve your performance here at school, and help with your attitude and your relationships. So make a promise to yourself to get plenty of sleep this school year because you deserve all the benefits that come from making such a wise choice.
