3. © Edco 2007 Exploring Science Biology To test a leaf for starch involves the following four steps: 1. Boil the leaf in water- this kills and softens the leaf. 2. Soak the leaf in hot alcohol – this removes the chlorophyll (green colour) 3. Place the leaf in boiling water- to re-soften the leaf 4. 7. © Edco 2007 Exploring Science Biology –Test the covered and uncovered leaves for starch. –The uncovered leaves turn blue-black (starch made in photosynthesis). –The covered leaves remain red-yellow (no starch made as photosynthesis does not happen in the dark).
