Rebellion and Redemption Our Goal Jesus has won the decisive victory. The challenge has always been where we place our loyalties. The controversy still rages and the deceptions are ever-present. Our prayer, then, is that this quarter’s lessons will reveal some of these deceptions and thus help us not just to choose Christ but to remain with Him.

Rebellion and Redemption Lesson 2, January 9 Rebellion and Redemption Lesson 2, January 9 Crisis in Eden

Crisis in Eden Key Text Genesis 3:15 NKJV “ ‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.’ ”

Crisis in Eden Quick Look 1. The Fall’s Beginning (Genesis 2:15-17) 2. The Fall’s Progress (Genesis 3:1-7) 3. The Fall’s Consequences (Genesis 3:14-19)

Crisis in Eden Initial Words We will look at how Satan was able to exploit human freedom and, thus, start the devastation that we all experience even today. The Fall remains a powerful reminder that our only safety as human beings exists not only in believing what God tells us but, more important, in obeying what He tells us, as well.

Crisis in Eden 1. The Fall’s Beginning Genesis 2:15-17 NKJV Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden... and...commanded...saying, ‘Of the tree of the garden you may freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’ ”

1. The Fall’s Beginning Three Blessings God “blessed” His creation in three specific areas. First, He blessed the sea creatures and the birds. To “ ‘be fruitful and multiply’ ” (Gen. 1:22). Second, Adam and Eve were blessed too, with similar encouragement: “ ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth’ ” (v. 28).

1. The Fall’s Beginning Three Blessings The third blessing is the seventh-day Sabbath (Gen. 2:3). Here is further confirmation that people are far more than just animals; they were created to enjoy fellowship with the Creator in ways none of the other creatures can. Here we see unmistakable evidence of the special place humans have been given in the Creation.

1. The Fall’s Beginning The Test at the Tree God created everything by a series of separations with clearly defined boundaries: light and darkness, waters above and waters below, land and sea, night and day, creatures according to their kind, a day separated from the others, a woman separated from a man, and a tree set apart from the others.

1. The Fall’s Beginning The Test at the Tree Adam and Eve were created as moral beings, and morality cannot exist without freedom. Here was a test to see what they would do with that freedom. “The tree of knowledge had been made a test of their obedience and their love to God.”—Patriarchs and Prophets 53.

Crisis in Eden 2. The Fall’s Progress Genesis 3:1-7 NKJV Now the serpent...said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, “You shall not eat of every tree of the garden”?... You will not surely die....’ So the woman...took its fruit and ate. She also gave her husband.... Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked....”

2. The Falls Progress Satan’s Tactic When Satan asked, “ ‘Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”?’ ” (Gen. 3:1, NIV), the implication was that God forbade them to eat from all the trees, when, in fact, that wasn’t what God had forbidden them to do. God’s character is being questioned here. This is a direct attack on Him.

2. The Falls Progress Satan’s Tactic Satan then directly challenged God’s authority: “ ‘You will not surely die’ ” (Gen. 3:4) and threw in the final thought: “ ‘God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and... be like God, knowing good and evil’ ” (v. 5). The tempter made it appear that God was not only dishonest but also with-holding something good from them.

2. The Falls Progress Satan’s Tactic The bait on the tempter’s “hook” was that if they ate the forbidden fruit, they would become “like God.” The reality is that they already were like God. They had been created in His image. Additionally, God was the original provider of their food, but part of the rebellion is choosing something to eat outside of God-given boundaries.

2. The Falls Progress Satan’s Tactic One major issue here is the rejection of God as the Provider of every good thing and choosing instead a man- made solution to human need. Their eating from the forbidden tree was a move outside of that provision and showed a lack of trust that was not warranted, especially given their unique circumstances.

Crisis in Eden 3. The Fall’s Consequences Genesis 3:14-19 NKJV So the Lord God said to the serpent:...‘I will put enmity... between your seed and her Seed. He shall bruise you head and you shall bruise His heal.’ To the woman... ‘Your husband shall rule over you.’... Then to Adam...‘For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.’ ”

3. The Fall’s Consequences The Damages Relationships that God established were fractured: between people and God (they hid from Him), between each other (Adam blamed Eve), and between humans and the environment (the serpent became an enemy; the ground would now produce thorns and thistles and would only provide food after much human labor).

3. The Fall’s Consequences The Damages The serpent was cursed and would eat dust, be loathed by the woman, and have its head bruised (Gen. 3:14, 15). Eve was to experience great pain in childbirth (v. 16). Adam was to toil and sweat for food rather than live as a king (vs. 17–19).

Crisis in Eden Final Words So, God provided an animal sacrifice to point to a Savior (Gen. 3:21). It was a creature, a snake, that had introduced them to sin, loss, and fractured relationships; it would be a creature, a lamb, that would point forward to the Deliverer, who would ensure restoration, reconciliation, and a future (see Gen. 3:15).
