Chapter 4 Test Thursday (tomorrow) Quick Review

Definitions Lewis Dot Structure Anion Acid Ionic Bond Valence electrons Cation Covalent compound

Valence electrons Write the electron configuration both long and short hand for Silicon. 1.Identify the outer shell 2.How many electrons are in the valence shell? 3.How many electrons would be needed to satisfy the octet rule? Know how do determine the number of electrons in the valence shell from the group numbers on the periodic table.

Covalent and ionic bonds Understand what each bond type is, and how it is formed. Know the properties of both covalent and ionic bonds

Counting Atoms Practice counting the atoms and naming the following compounds. What type of bond is each? (NH₄)₂SO₄Fe₃(PO₄)₂S₂F₅ K₃PO₄NO₂Mg(OH)₂

Acids…. Hydrogen must be present Acids are solutions that donate hydrogen ions. H + nonmetal Hydro + name of the nonmental + “ic” acid Example: HBr hydrobromic acid HCl hydrochloric acid

Acid nomenclature continued…. Hydrogen + polyatomc anion Ending in ate – the acid name ends in ic Ending in ite – the acid name ends in ous H₃PO₄ H₃PO₃
