Access Grid Conference Facility at Boston University Ariella Rebbi and Jennifer Teig von Hoffman, Scientific Computing and Visualization, Office of Information Technology

What is the Access Grid?

The Access Grid Video conferencing and data sharing over high performance networks, such as Internet2’s Abilene network Closely related to computational Grids, a current movement in high- performance computing

A World-Wide Network Approximately 90 Access Grid locations Installed in 11 countries, including: China Germany Italy Japan United Kingdom

An Open-Source Project All Access Grid software is either open- source or commodity (ie, Windows) All Access Grid hardware is readily available, off-the-shelf As an open-source project, the Access Grid lends itself to be adapted to many different circumstances and needs

Events on the Access Grid A sampling of activities from September 1999 - present

Alliance Chautauqua 1999 George Sherman Union conference auditorium 8 participating Access Grid sites, including Moscow State University

Alliance Chautauqua 1999 The Access Grid is "one of the most compelling glimpses into the future I've seen since I first saw NCSA Mosaic." Larry Smarr, NCSA

Alliance Chautauqua 2000 Boston University participated as a remote site Conference hosted by University of Kansas and Ohio Supercomputer Center

Alliance Chautauqua 2000

Supercomputing 2000, Dallas

Chemistry Dept. Interviews The need: Assess graduate student applicants’ language fluency and proficiency, at a distance (from China) The strategy: Collaborate with Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronomics to hold interviews over the Access Grid
