What is Scanner? It is an input Device. Scanner is a device that optically scan images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image. Once the image is in digital form, you can store it on your computer hard disk, manipulate it with the graphics design program, add it to your poster design and more.

Once the image is scanned, some kind of software is needed to convert the digital code to a viewable image. Most scanners comes with basic software. Very high resolution scanners are used for scanning for high- resolution printing, but lower resolution scanners are adequate for capturing images for computer display.

Why Scanner? To reduce the time spent on data input. To captures photo, pictures, drawing or graphics directly. To save images for future use.

Application of Scanner: Image Editing Document management Forms conversion OCR Biometric Utilities

Types of Scanners

Flatbed Scanner : Flatbed scanners, also called desktop scanners, are the most versatile and commonly used scanners. Sheet-Fed Scanner: Sheet-fed scanners are similar to flatbed scanners except the document is moved and the scan head is immobile. A sheet-fed scanner looks a lot like a small portable printer.

Handheld Scanner: Handheld scanners use the same basic technology as a flatbed scanner, but rely on the user to move them instead of a motorized belt. This type of scanner typically does not provide good image quality. However, it can be useful for quickly capturing text. Drum Scanner: Drum scanners are used by the publishing industry to capture incredibly detailed images. They use a technology called a photomultiplier tube (PMT).

Film Scanner: scanning photographic film directly into a computer without the use of any intermediate printmaking. to scan in a print of any size the photographer has direct control over cropping and aspect ratio from the original Planetary Scanner Also called an orbital scanner, is a type of image scanner for making scans of rare books and other easily damaged documents

Functionality

Electronic code A scanner ‘see’ images and converts the printed text or pictures into electronic codes that can be understood by the computer. Electronic code

Digitized image A representation of a two-dimensional image using ones and zeros (binary).

Functionality of scanner : 1) Drum Scanners developed earlier and still used for the highest possible image quality use a photomultiplier tube (PMT)photomultiplier as the image sensor.

2) Flatbed scanners [charge-coupled device]charge-coupled device

How a flatbed scanner works? a flatbed scanner ‘see’ images and converts them into electronic codes.

It reads the image as a series of dots and then generates the digitized image. How a flatbed scanner works?

Digitized image is sent to computer and stored as a file.

3) Flatbed scanners [contact image sensor ] : Includes red, green and blue light emitting diodes (LEDs)LEDs 300 to 600 sensors spanning the width of the scan area CIS scanners are cheaper, lighter and thinner, but do not provide the same level of quality and resolution found in most CCD scanners.

4) Handheld Scanner 20 Smaller than the previous two scanners. The user must move the scanner across the document. Image quality us usually lower.

5) Sheet-Fed Scanner

Market Updates

Recent Document Scanners Epson workforce DS-510 color document scanner scan up to 3000 sheets a day & priced at $399. ADF or automatic document feeder for scanning large stacks of 50-100 documents in one batch. Pulstek new smart office PS456U scanner scan up to 8000 sheets a day & priced at $ 849.

PANASONIC DOCUMENT SCANNERS Panasonic announced its new KV-S1057C and KV-S1027C workgroup document scanners. They have additional new features such as high-speed, high- volume duplex scanning. And also have reliable paper feed mechanism, various document and card Scanning, intelligent double-feed detection. Because of these new features scanners of panasonic have demand in market.

New Scanners In Market Brothers India pvt. Ltd announced the launch of three compact scanners these are: ADS-2100W ADS-1100W ADS-1600W High speed automatic color document scanner, offer fast speed, high quality scanning,2-sided scanning capability.

Now a days 3D scanner is very famous in market. Market is segmented on the basis of scanner type, range, services, application. One of its type laser scanner further propel the adoption of 3D scanning. 3D Scanner

MARKET GROWTH OF 3D Scanner

Advanced Technologies

Panasonic KV-SL10 Series advanced one touch scanning scan different size papers at the same time double sided scanning takes as long as single sided scanning

Fujitsu Fi Series Features: 1. GI Processor 2. Skew Reducer 3. Paper Protection 4. PaperStream software for high quality images Fujitsu Fi-7140 and Fi-7240

Epson scanners use the light sensitive capabilities of CCD chips to catch and convert the information contained in light into a digital file. What CCD brings to your photographic images is better picture quality, greater sensitivity, reduced image noise and better dynamic range. With CIS (Contact Image Sensor) technology, the light from RGB (red, green, blue) LEDs is reflected by the original. Light is sent directly through an array of lenses to the image sensor which can be either CCD or CMOS. There are advantages to both technologies. In general, CIS allows the construction of smaller. lower power consumption. Each CCD sensor element - the photo diode - has a defined area that is sensitive to light. Ensuring that the light from the scan is directed to that sensitive spot increases the overall sensitivity of the system, which enhances productivity and reduces potential noise. This can be achieved by using a micro-lens system which allows gathering the light into the most sensitive part - the central portion of the photo diode. Epson Scanners with CCD and CIS technology

Reverse Engineering using 3D Scanners 3D scanner to create an image of an artefact 3D scanners to create 3D animation and special effects
