Reproduction

Asexual Reproduction A new organism produced from a single parent Q. Please circle one: In asexual reproduction are the offspring genetically different or genetically identical to the parent A. Genetically identical Q. What type of cell division? A. Mitosis or binary fission

Examples of Asexual Reproduction Binary Fission Binary fission in prokaryotes for example bacteria Single circular DNA is copied then cell splits in two No spindle

Mitosis- in eukaryotic cells ex, Amoeba and Euglena. Chromosomes are replicated then separated during Mitosis and cytokinesis Occurs in unicellular and multicellular organisms (simpler ones) Genetically Identical to parent Both binary fission and mitosis create two new daughter cells

Budding A miniature version of the parent grows out from the parent’s body, it then breaks off and develops into an adult for Ex hydra, sea anemones and yeast. It may stay attached and form a colony Ex corals, jelly fish

Vegetative Reproduction  Genetically Identical individual arises from parent  Ex: strawberries, spider plant  Can also come from bulbs and tubers, ex potatoes are stem tubers

Spores  Algae, fungi and plants (moss), can reproduce by produced genetically identical spores through mitosis. Hyphae grow upwards form a sporangium. Cells make spores by mitosis. Taken away by wind or animals to create new colonies

Fragmentation Parent organism splits into pieces which can then grow into a new individual Ex flat worms, sea star

Sexual Reproduction Need two parents- Separate sexes Gametes: egg and sperm are produced in the sex organs, Female → ovaries, Male  Testis Gametes made by the process of meiosis DNA from separate parents fuses upon fertilization Genetically different individual to parents

Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Asexual reproduction verses sexual reproduction? Asexual -Advantage: only one parent needed -Disadvantage: no genetic variation Sexual -Advantage: brings about greater variation among the offspring= evolution -Disadvantage: Need two parents
