2 LOCATION The Colossus of Rhodes was built in the Aegean sea, 12 miles off the coast of Turkey The structure was built around 292 BC In 226 BC, an earthquake hit Rhodes and destroyed the monument. In 2008 the new Colossus of Rhodes was built by Dr. Dimitris Koutoulas It stood 100 feet tall to bring many tourists to Rhodes

3 PURPOSE Chares of Lindos built the Colossus of Rhodes The structure was built in honor of Helios, the god of the sun It was used as a type of lighthouse. Fire-kindled in his head could be seen from far away

4 UNIQUENESS As tall as a 15-story building Started building in 292 BC and finished in 280 BC The basic construction was bronze Pedestal made of marble Inside filled with stone columns
