1 UNC General Administration Updates Senate Bill (SB) 761 (July 2014) Reverse Transfer

2 Senate Bill (SB) 761 (July 2014) Requires UNC BOG, State Board of Community Colleges to: Develop a plan for awarding academic credit to students with military training and experience Establish a process whereby students can transfer these credits between/among NCCC and UNC institutions in a uniform manner.

3 Magnitude of, Starting Point for Task Hundreds of military occupations, thousands of formal training courses Questions, misperceptions, resistance Starting point, foundation is ACE recommendations

4 Magnitude of, Starting Point for Task Pros, cons of beginning with legislation Central questions: Transferability, equivalency Is student adequately prepared to proceed in program?

5 Military Credit Advisory Council (MCAC) Joint NCCC – UNC system council comprised of college/university faculty and staff, system office reps Will pursue first: Nursing, Business, Education, Allied Health, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Computer Sciences and IT, English and Communication, and Humanities (including foreign languages).

6 Military Credit Advisory Council (MCAC) Will begin with pilot panel to evaluate training and experience of military members with Nursing background Immediate needs of Veterans Nursing Programs Well-documented Joint Service Transcripts Builds on current relationships with NC military community Projected Nursing shortages in NC

7 Military Credit Advisory Council (MCAC) Requested nominations for faculty members from UNC and NCCC institutions Asked for faculty with military background, knowledge of military students/credit, experience as ACE evaluator Will proceed in mid-March

8 Reverse Transfer Update Over 1,450 credentials awarded (associate degrees/diplomas etc.) All 58 community colleges and 16 universities are participating

9 Reverse Transfer Update Student transcript data will be sent every year in March and July to the community colleges

10 University policies regarding benefits of the associate degree on the web site
