geometric probability Objective: To use segment and area models to find the probability of events

Probability vs. Geometric Probability A probability is a number from 0 to 1 that represents the chance that an event will occur. In an earlier course, you may have evaluated probabilities by counting the number of favorable outcomes and dividing by the total number of possible outcomes. In this lesson, you will use a related process in which the division involves geometric measures such as length or area. This is called geometric probability.

Using Segment Area Models

Example #1

Example #2 A bee lands randomly on a ruler as shown. Find the probability that the bee lands on a point between 2 and 10.

Example #3 A museum offers a tour every hour. If Benny arrives at the tour site at a random time, what is the probability that he will have to wait at least 15 minutes? What are the odds that he has to wait at least 15 minutes?

Finding Probability Using Area A dart is tossed and hits the dart board shown. The dart is equally likely to land on any point on the dart board. Find the probability that the dirt lands in the red region. Example #4

Example #5 A circle is inscribed in a square target with 20 cm sides. Find the probability that a dart landing randomly within the square does not land within the circle.

Example #6 What is the probability of landing on a purple circle? 16 m
