Equivalent Expressions 6.7

Term When addition or subtraction signs separate an algebraic expression in to parts, each part is called a term.

Coefficient The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable is called the coefficient

Constant A term without a variable is called a constant

Like terms Like terms are terms that contain the same variables.

3x + 7 + x

Simplify Expressions with One variable To simplify an algebraic expression use properties to write an equivalent expression that has no like terms and no parentheses.

Example:

Got it?

Simplify Expressions with two variables Properties can be used to simplify or to factor expressions with two variables. Compare the effects or operations on numbers to the effects of operations on variables.

Examples: Simplify the expression (14y + x) + 22y

Simplify 4(2x + y) using the Distributive Property.

Factor 27x + 18y

Got it?
