Group Discussion  I’ll give each group a discussion question to work on for about 5-8 minutes.  Read the question and work on an answer with your partner.  After you discuss your ideas with your partners, you’ll present your question and findings to the rest of the group.

Pre Reading Vocabulary: Read the words on your vocabulary paper out loud with the person next to you. Use this scale for each key word: 1. I don’t know it at all 2. I’ve seen it before 3. I know it and use it

Pre Reading Vocabulary: Read the words in context example sentences out loud and write your own definition. It might be hard, I know but you can:  Use the clues in the sentence to help infer the meaning.  Look for any clues in the word itself:  Does it sound like any other word I know?  Are there any Greek or Latin roots that I recognize?  Think about its part of speech, is it a verb, noun, adjective or adverb?

Pre Reading Vocabulary: Now, look at these definitions and decide which ones fit for each word. Discuss with a partner:  Lessen, let up  Flexible, springy  In a wild and disorderly manner  Machine; equipment  Strong shaking, collision

Pre Reading Vocabulary: Now, look at these definitions and decide which ones fit for each word. Discuss with a partner:  Lessen, let up (slacken)  Flexible, springy (resilient)  In a wild and disorderly manner (tumultuously)  Machine; equipment (apparatus)  Strong shaking, collision (concussion)

Pre Reading Vocabulary: Now, work with your partner on synonyms and antonyms for these vocabulary words. Write your own creative sentence.

Listening  We’re going to listen to today’s short story.  You’ll have a copy of the reading to follow along, but I’m going to stop the recording at certain times and you’ll have to answer questions, or draw pictures on the graphic organizer that is on the back of your vocabulary paper.  Later, we’re going to dig into the details of the story, but for now just follow along and enjoy the story!

Close Reading  In groups, we’re going to get excerpts (sectors!) of the story to work on.  First, I want you to read the questions on the right hand side.  Next, take turns reading the excerpts out loud. You can switch every sentence, or paragraph.  Discuss the answer to the questions, using evidence from the excerpt.  After you have come up with some ideas, EACH PERSON is responsible for writing down an answer on their own paper.  If there is time, we’re going to review the questions as a group. So you should only write things that you might have to share with the whole class.
