3 Developing Leaders Overview  Objective: To expose general IT students to leadership concepts and involve them in leadership activities!  Description summary: Seminar event with community leaders and hands-on activities for attendees to better understand leadership concepts.

4 Larry Dennis Lawrence C. Dennis is currently serving as dean of the FSU College of Communication & Information. He earned his BS in Physics at the University of Michigan in 1974 and his PhD in Nuclear Physics at the University of Virginia in 1979. Previously, he was Dean of the FSU College of Information (2004-2009), Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of the Office for Distributed and Distance Learning (ODDL) at FSU (2002-2004).

5 Jordan Merrick  Jordan Merrick traveled full-circle when he was accepted as the Director of FSU Challenge in July of 2004. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from FSU and the Recreation and Leisure Services Administration Program. In-between graduation and his return to FSU, Jordan worked for Project Adventure, Inc. (PA) building, repairing, inspecting and performing site evaluations for Challenge Courses all over the United States.

6 Demian Wright  Demian Wright is a Systems Engineer at Hayes Computer Services in Tallahassee, FL. Demian began working for Hayes during the year of 2000. Demian specializes in Networking and has extensive experience in structuring and maintaining a variety of Networks. Demian has been asked to attend our events to provide IT Students with some insight from a professional in their field who has experience and knows how leadership plays a role in more than one are of the IT Industry.

7 Advertising and Staff Advertising:  Teacher promotions, maybe providing incentive for students to attend  Flyers in and around Shores building  Mass emails to CCI students Staff:  AITP members  Center for Leadership staff  Project team members

8 General Structure  One full day for event: Developing Leadership in IT Students  Food/Drinks served  Sign-up required  Take place on Saturday: October 23, 2010  Depending on amount of people, take place in LSB 006 or Moore Auditorium

9 Tentative Schedule  Opening Overview speaker  Speaker 1 (Larry Dennis - What Leadership Is)  Activity  Speaker 2 (Jordan Merrick - Leadership Misconceptions)  Activity  Intermission for Food/Drink  Speaker 3 (Demian Wright - Role of an IT Leader)  Activity  Q/A Session with all 3 speakers  Closing speaker

10 Possible Leadership Activities  Reality Check: To pinpoint actual leadership behavior and to set behavior goals  Survival: List items of importance for survival if lost in the middle of nowhere.  Equilateral Triangle Activity: Teams (in groups of 5) will work together blindfolded to make the best triangle using rope  Scavenger Hunt (from Project 13): Participants work in teams and use clues to find hidden objects on campus; teamwork-skills as well as individual skills to help the team are integral to success.  Card Sorting (from Project 13): Have a deck of cards for each group, shuffle the cards. Place the cards on the center of the table. Tell the groups to put the cards back in order from Ace - King with all four suits ordered in one stack.
