POD #2 BasicAdvanced I-45I +5 I-4I +15 + I-12I 50 31

Add Integers Integers like 2 and -2 are called opposites because they are the same distance from 0, but on opposite sides.

Two integers that are opposites are also called additive inverses. The Additive Inverse Property states the sum of any number and its additive inverse is zero. So, 2 +(-2) = 0

To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values. The sum is: Positive if both integers are positive Negative if both integers are negative Examples: 7+4=11 -7+(-4)= -11

To add integers with the different signs, subtract their absolute values. The sum is: Positive if the positive integer’s absolute value is greater. Negative if the negative integer’s absolute value is greater. Examples: 9+(-4)=5 -9+ 4= -5

Whiteboard time 5 + (-3) =2 -3 + -2 = -15 + 19 =4 -5

(-12) + (-4) + (-3) =-19 (-80) + 30 + (-20)= 11 + (-29) =-18 -70

Write an addition expression to describe each situation, then find the sum: Cole receives $40 for his birthday. Then he spends $15 at the movies. Write an addition expression to describe each situation: 40 + (-15)= 25; Cole now has $25.

Write an addition expression to describe each situation, then find the sum: Sam Bradford is sacked for a loss of 5 yards. On the next play the team loses 15 yards. Then they gain 12 yards on the third play. Write an addition expression to describe each situation: -5 + (-15) + 12 = -8; The Eagles lost a total of 8 yards.
