1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells are the basic unit of life. 3. All cells come from pre-existing cells.

1. Living things require food for energy. 2. Living things respire (breathe). 3. Living things respond to various stimuli in the environment.

4. Living things produce waste. 5. Living things are able to repair themselves. 6. Living things can only be produced by other living things 7. Living things have a limited lifespan.

CCells are the smallest units of any organism that can be considered alive. AAll living organisms are composed of cells. TThere are many different kinds of cells. (We have at least 85) AAll living cells have: A cell membrane and cytoplasm. AAnimal cells differ from plant cells.

 Cell membrane - separates the contents of the cell from its’ environment and helps maintain constant conditions inside. It is porous.  Cytoplasm - a complex mixture of salts and organic molecules, all the contents of the cell are in the cytoplasm.  Nucleus - Contains genetic material, DNA, which carries information needed for the structure and function of the cell and the organism as a whole.

Cell membrane, in both animal and plant cells: boundary between cell and external environment controls movement of material entering and exiting the cell ( oxygen, nutrients, etc. enter ~ waste products and excess water leave) flexible and allows cell to vary its shape if needed

Cell wall, in plant cells only: an additional external boundary outside the plasma membrane in some cells relatively inflexible much thicker than the plasma membrane found in the cells of plants, fungi, almost all bacteria, and some protists not found in animal cells

Cell wall made of different substances in different organisms Cellulose in plants (forms fibers... The fiber in our diet)

PLANT CELL Plant cells are different from animal cells because they: have cell walls (makes them rectangular-shaped) have chlorophyll (pigment found in the chloroplasts) Have a large central vacuole (stores water, ions, and can be used to store toxins)
