THE FORMATION OF GOVERNENT Each nation has a unique way of carrying out their own government functions. This involves both small and large levels of bureaucracy depending on the countries size. What about the United States? How is its government organized?

Government Systems  The relationship between a government and a nation can be described as either being unitary or federal.  A unitary system gives all they key powers of a nation to the central government.  A federal system divides the power of government between nation and state.

CONSTITUTIONS AND GOVERNMENTS  A constitution is a plan for government and serves three major purposes.  A constitution establishes ideals that people of a nation share.  A constitution defines a government’s basic powers and duties.  A constitution provides the “supreme” law of a nation.

CONSTITUTIONS AND GOVERNMENTS  Constitutions can be written or unwritten.  All countries have a constitution. That is to say, they all have a plan for government.  Special emphasis is given to countries that are recognized as having “constitutional governments.”  Constitutions themselves are considered to be “incomplete guides.” Why do you think that is?

CONSTITUTIONS AND GOVERNMENTS  Most constitutions contain a statement of goals which is called a preamble.  The main body of a constitution sets out a nation’s plan for government and describes the relationship between state and federal government.  The main body of a constitution usually contains parts called articles. The U.S. Constitution contains seven articles.

POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT  Politics is the effort to control or influence government.  Many people participate in politics because they realize the affect government has on their daily lives.  Others participate in politics because they understand that many conflicts in society can be managed through politics.  What are special interest and how do they affect politics?

GOVERNING IN A COMPLEX WORLD  They is a very delicate balance that exist between industrialized and developing nations which has an affect on the politics of a place.  Growing interdependence among these different nations influences political decisions that countries make.  How is it that other countries around the world can have an affect on our political process?
