CHAPTER 17 TRUE GOD AND TRUE MAN

DIVINE AND HUMAN Jesus worked miracles Jesus had power over illness Jesus had power over nature Jesus had power over death Jesus was claimed by the Father at the baptism and Transfiguration Jesus referred to himself as the Son of God; the Son of Man; and as “I AM” Jesus forgave sins Jesus ate and drank Jesus became tired and slept Jesus showed emotion Jesus did common chores Jesus suffered and died Like us in all things but sin Jesus can relate to our experiences. We should never be afraid to bring our joys and sorrows to Him in prayer.

Truly God…Truly Man Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Jesus said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. If anyone believes in me, rivers of living water will flow out from that person’s heart, as the Scripture says.” Jesus said, “ I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give up so that the world may have life.” and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the form of a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “You are my Son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with you.” When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him. He said with a loud voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” He said this because Jesus was commanding the evil spirit to come out of the man. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have the baby, and she gave birth to her first son. When Jesus saw Mary crying and the Jews who came with her also crying, he was upset and was deeply troubled. He asked, “Where did you bury him?” “Come and see, Lord,” they said. Jesus cried. So the Jews said, “See how much he loved him.” Early the next morning, as Jesus was going back to the city, he became hungry. Early the next morning, while it was still dark, Jesus woke and left the house. He went to a lonely place, where he prayed. He is just the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon.

Hypostatic Union Jesus had two natures: human and divine. What do we know about God (divine nature)? There is one God in three Divine Persons God is all good, all loving, all powerful, all knowing, etc… God is eternal (no beginning and no end) God is uncreated Jesus, as God, has existed from all eternity. Jesus, as man, existed from the time of his Incarnation (conceived by the Holy Spirit) and was born of the Virgin Mary— body and soul—over 2000 years ago

Jesus is a model for us… he tells us how to grow in holiness Gospel teachings: Love one another (Jn 13:34) To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your cloak do not withhold your coat as well (Lk 6:29) Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me (Mt 25:40) If you love me you will keep my commandments (Jn 14:15 Love the Lord you God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself (Lk 10:27
