Welcome to Social Studies today! Please take out your Hebrews Vocabulary to turn in. You will need your composition books and a pencil please

1. This is one of the first civilizations that we have studied that is not a river valley civilization. How do you think the development of this culture was different? (hint- think about your essay! How does geography shape this civilization?)

2. The Phoenicians were extremely successful traders in the Mediterranean region. What skills or tools would they had to have had to be so successful? Consider: - What resources they had and did not have -The technology needed -The cultural advancements needed

3. The Phoenicians have not left behind many written records, therefore, much of what we know about these people comes from the civilizations they traded with (such as the Greeks), ruins and artifacts, and from the Bible. What should we keep in mind when interpreting these sources?

Using only three words, how would you best describe the Phoenician people? (Be prepared to explain why you chose those three) Example: Polytheistic, Purple, Persuasion: Polytheistic expresses their religious beliefs, including possible sacrifice for which they are infamous; Purple for the dye which is their legacy and a reflection of the power of their trade monopoly; Persuasion for the cultural skills which caused them to be less favored by their fellow trading partners and may be a lasting cultural legacy today)

Balthazar of Tyre DIRECTIONS: Read the story written from the perspective of a Phoenician merchant. Create a graphic organizer about Phoenician trade. Include as many details as you can. You may work alone, or with a partner, but it is due at the end of this class period for a classwork grade. Done early? Illustrate it for me!
