The Principles of Design C.M.E.B.U.R.P. ContrastMovement Emphasis Balance Unity Rhythm Pattern

Contrast Is the difference between light and dark, colors, size, shape, and texture.

Movement The direction that is created in a composition that causes the view eyes in a controlled manner. It’s like a road map or directions to a destination.

Emphasis The most important point or area in a composition or design. The focal point.

Balance Can be Symmetrical and Asymmetrical or Formal or Informal. Good balance means everything looks evenly weighted in the composition.

Unity When all parts of the composition fit or work together in harmony. The design just flows together.

Rhythm Is created by placing shapes, lines, and/or colors (one or more element of art) next to or near each other so movement is created in a lyrical fashion.. “Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing.”

Pattern Is created by repeating a single design--motif in a regular or irregular manner.

The Principle of Design Project 1.Draw a box on your paper. A BIG BOX. 2.You are going to break up the space inside your box by drawing your name with block letters that overlap and/or touch. 3. After that you are going to draw 2 smaller boxes, one inside the other that are smaller than the first box. ***You can reverse step 2 and 3 if you so choose.

Creating The Frames

Adding your name.

Directions Cont. 4. The inner box, all objects will be colored using a monochromatic scheme. (The value range of one color.) Explore Rhythm. 5. The second box, color all objects using either a Warm Colors (red, orange, yellow) or Cool Colors (Violet, Blue, Green). Explore Pattern. 6. The Third box (the biggest) You will choose your color scheme. Explore Movement.

What is the key? You want to be sure you create movement and emphasis throughout the entire design. You can create this by color, line, value, shape, or texture/pattern. You want to make sure your design has balance, unity, and rhythm. Use pattern to your advantage and remember, Repeat patterns for a more unified effect.

Final Notes Craftsmanship is the key! Use colored pencils. Build your layers with colored pencils. Plan your design first in your sketchbook. Saves time and heartache. Project is due Friday end of class. Worth 100 points.
