2. Congress of Vienna (1814-1825)  Influential leaders meet in Austria to try to restore stability and order in France.  Most influential leader was Prince Clemens von Metternich of Austria  MAIN GOAL: to create a lasting peace in Europe—(no more empire- building Napoleons allowed!)

4. The PLAN  Redraw the map of Europe— surround France with strong countries (created kingdom of the Netherlands, gave Prussia some French land—a “buffer zone”)  Promoted idea of LEGITIMACY— restoring monarchs to their “rightful” throne.  Created the CONCERT OF EUROPE—an agreement to meet together to solve future problems

7. BUT….  They failed to foresee how powerful new forces like NATIONALISM (strong feelings of pride/devotion to ones country) would work against them.  European nations were ready to try to become completely independent (this will then influence Latin American nations, too!)

8. Imagine this… What would happen if Shenendehowa high school took over all of the capital district high schools, including APHS—with the goal of improving test scores & educating better graduates. How would the students of APHS react? What might we do? How would we react to this? Or prevent it from happening again?
