Digital Soil Information in Austria status and applications WG DSM Miskolc 7./8.04.2005 Alexandra Freudenschuß

Content Overview and status of Digital Soil Information Applications and thematic maps Recent results within the ECALP- project Outlook

Soil Map of Austria 1:1 Mio ESDB; Nestroy, 2002; BMLFUW, 2005 Soil Map of Austria 1:750.000 (Fink, 1979) status: 100% of the territory availability: information about soil type and parent material Soil Management Survey (1:25,000) status: 99% of the agricultural area is mapped availability: Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW) -> online version eBOD: http://bfw.ac.at/ebod Overview/status of DSI (1)

Forest Site Mapping status:~ 20% of the forest area is mapped availability: partly digital, diverse data owners (private, public, university); access often difficult Soil Taxation Survey (1:2,000; 1:2,880) status: 100% of the agricultural area is mapped availability: BMF, Federal Surveying Office: ~20% in digital form, currently no digital access Soil Information System BORIS (Umweltbundesamt) status: more than 10,000 sites from 45 soil investigations Environmental Soil Inventories of the Federal Provinces, Forest Soil Monitoring (BFW), and others availability : access via internet to site and profile data; http://www.umweltbundesamt.at/boris Overview/status of DSI (2)

Applications and thematic maps Soil Erosion Risk Ground water protection, water conditions Soil vulnerability of agricultural soils to sewage sludge application Risk of nitrate leaching Preservation of evidence in environmental impact assessments Development of Soil Indicators

Applications and thematic maps Water protection areas

Water conditions

Applications and thematic maps Combination of soil surveys – sewage sludge Englisch et al. 2001 in „Bodenaufnahmesysteme in Österreich“ ÖBG Heft 62 Arable and grassland Forest

Results within the ECALP-project Available Data Criteria to fill missing information: Slope Exposition Topography ForestWater bodyUrban Soil Management Survey Forest Site Mapping

Criteria to fill missing information: ForestWater bodyUrban Soil Management Survey Forest Site Mapping Slope Exposition Topography Results within the ECALP-project Dominant Soil Type

Outlook Development of a metadatabase to existing Forest Site Mapping (Meta Map - BFW) Interpolation of point related soil data and intersection with other spatial (soil) information Contribution to the development of soil indicators (national & EU level) Improvement of spatial soil information by using remote sensing data (e.g. GSE project Soil-SAGE) Input of expertise to the DSM group
