3 There are two kinds of rewards to teaching Intrinsic Rewards Come from within Are personally rewarding For emotional or intellectual reasons Share your passion for a subject with others Extrinsic Rewards Job security Summer vacations Weekends off Convenient work schedule (especially for parents) Autonomy ( capacity to control one’s own existence) Occupational status

4 What are the difficulties in Teaching?  Working Conditions  Discipline  Salaries  Pressure from parents, principal, board of education, and state department of education to perform well on state tests  Lack of parental support  Student attitudes  How to reach all students

5 Are teachers considered to be professionals? o A specialized body of knowledge– knowledge of specific content, pedagogical content, knowledge of learners and learning o Emphasis on decision making—topics and goals, organization of classroom, examples, activities o Reflection- think about what your doing and do self- evaluations o Autonomy- making decisions based on your specialized knowledge o Ethical standards for conduct- a set of moral standards for acceptable professional behavior

6 Requirements to become a teacher in the state of Kentucky I.4 year college degree from an accredited college  Elementary (K-4 or K-5 w/emphasis in a subject)  Middle School (5-8 with emphasis in one or two subjects)  Secondary School/High School (8/9-12 emphasis in one subject with an education endorsement) II.Student teaching your last semester III.Pass the Praxis exam in your area of emphasis

7 4 year degree = Bachelors Degree Once you are hired- you will do your intern year of teaching (1 to 2 years) (KTIP-Kentucky Teacher Internship Program) Meade County has MTIP ( Meade Teacher Internship Program) You will have multiple observations by principal, mentoring teacher, and university teacher You will have to log hours with your mentoring teacher You will have to video tape yourself teaching lessons Keep a portfolio Once you start teaching, you must start your Masters Degree within 5 years. Once you start your Masters Degree, you have 10 years to complete it. Optional to get your Rank I which is 30 hours above a Masters Degree
