3 What is a Document Based Question? Primary Sources - original records created at the time historical events occurred or well after events in the form of memoirs and oral histories. Examples: letters, manuscripts, diaries, journals, newspapers, speeches, interviews, memoirs, documents produced by government agencies such as Congress or the Office of the President, photographs, audio recordings, moving pictures or video recordings, research data, and objects or artifacts such as works of art or ancient roads, buildings, tools, and weapons. AIM: DO NOW: COPY THE AIM, THE DEFINITION OF “PRIMARY SOURCES” AND LIST 3 EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY SOURCES.

13 Describe some of the tasks performed by the slaves. ANSWER: Slaves had to perform hard manual labor such as packing tobacco into large barrels and then loading them on ships A good formula to answer this is to combine the general information with the more specific information.

17 What was the job of the overseer? Word clue: over seer Picture clues: Better clothes than the slaves Not working at hard labor A pen and book (inference: to keep track of the number of barrels packed and loaded

18 ANSWER: The overseer watched over the slaves to make sure that they were working. They did not do hard labor like the slaves, but because of the pen and book in the picture we can infer that they sometimes did paperwork. Use the inferences of the word “overseer” and the picture clues to create the answer What was the job of the overseer?

22 Homework: Bring in a picture or photograph from a newspaper that might be a good document for a DBQ 100 years from now. The picture should 1. Show daily life 2. Show something special to this particular time? Give a written answer for the question below: What important thing could people in the future learn from the picture you chose?
