Predated the Wu experiment. Verdict of Wolfgang Pauli: ``Give my regards to my friend Salam and tell him to work on something better’’

10 © Imperial College LondonPage 10 Prince Philip on Salam ``The main thing about Salam is that, despite his not working in Pakistan, he continues to be available to Commonwealth and world science wherever he works in the free world.’’ Address to the Pakistan Association for the Advancement of Science, 1958.

Thesis title: ``Problems in the classical and quantum theories of gravitation’’ (Salam bet with Bondi) First postdoc at ICTP Trieste 1972-73 Faculty colleague at Imperial College 1979-88 Two kinds of genius? Salam was a ``magician’’ Abdus Salam Chair of Theoretical Physics, Imperial College, 2006-2015

13 © Imperial College LondonPage 13 Salam: a cultural amphibian A man of two worlds: ``Salam has the heart of a poet and the mind of a scientist. He is an excellent physicist concerned with deep patterns; he is also a deeply compassionate man. These two threads intertwined throughout his life’’ Robert Walgate, New Scientist, 1976

14 © Imperial College LondonPage 14 Science in the Third World Third world countries must become arbiters of their own scientific and technological destinies Training of a scientific elite is essential Founded ICTP Trieste, 1964 Chief Scientific Advisor to the President of Pakistan 1961-74 President, Third World Academy of Sciences, 1983- Visionary book ``Ideals and Realities’’, 1987
