C HAPTER 11 L ESSON 1 What are Earth’s natural resources

R ENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources- can replaced through natural processes almost as fast as they are used. Water Sunlight Trees Plants Wind

N ONRENEWABLE RESOURCE Nonrenewable resource- cannot be replaced as fast as they are used. It may take millions of years to replenish them. Fossil fuels- gas, oil, coal Minerals

A IR RESOURCES Nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide are renewable resources. They cycle in the environment Air pollution- something is put into the air that should not be there. May come from the burning of fossil fuels. Can affect organisms health or breathing.

L AND RESOURCES Land resources include Farmland Grazing land Forests Soil Minerals Wildlife

L AND RESOURCES People use lumber to build houses. Soil is important for growing crops Land is important because it provides minerals we use. Examples- iron which is used to make steel for buildings, bikes, and tools Calcite which is used to make cement

F ORESTS Forests provide us with many items including: Lumber Rubber Paper Nuts and fruits Medicines from the rainforest Forests provide a habitat for many species Forest reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air

W ATER RESOURCES About 75 % of Earth’s surface is covered in water. Most of that water is salt water which humans and most organisms can’t use. Only 3 % of water is freshwater and most of that is frozen in glaciers. It is recycled in the water cycle. Water can become polluted by people dumping things into or from chemicals from the land. Water uses- bathing, drinking, and cleaning Industry uses water to manufacture products.

O CEAN RESOURCES Salt from the ocean can removed through the process of evaporation. Tin, Magnesium, copper, and iron can be found on the ocean floor. Deposits of oil and natural gas are found on the ocean floor. Ocean water can provide energy to make electricity but only a few countries have the right coastal environment to harness the energy from ocean water.

C ONNECTIONS AMONG RESOURCES Air, land, and water can become polluted. Habitats can be changed or destroyed. Supplies like minerals can be used more quickly then they can be replaced. The Human footprint- How much humans have impacted the world.

R EDUCING THE IMPACT You can make a difference with regards to your human footprint. You can reduce, reuse, and recycle.
