Understand how our view of the solar system has changed over time and how discoveries made have led to our changing our view of the solar system. Learn planetary characteristics such as number of moons, size, composition, type of atmosphere, gravity, temperature and surface features. Understand the movement of planetary bodies. Understand which planetary characteristics are more important than others when it relates to our understanding of other worlds. Understand how proximity to the sun influences planets. Understand the methods and tools scientists use to learn about other planets and moons in our solar system. Understand the conditions needed for a habitable world and determine if there are habitable worlds in our solar system or outside the solar system. Understand how we look for and study solar systems other than our own. 1.Complex Knowledge: demonstrations of learning that go aboveand above and beyond what was explicitly taught. 2.Knowledge: meeting the learning goals and expectations. 3.Foundational knowledge: simpler procedures, isolated details, vocabulary. 4.Limited knowledge: know very little details but working toward a higher level.

BELL WORK 1-28-16 HOW DOES GRAVITY AFFECT A PLANETS HABITABILITY? I'M ATTRACTED TO YOU!!! BY A FORCE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO YOUR MASS AND INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO THE SQUARE OF YOUR DISTANCE FROM ME.

Humans are a very adaptable species. We do have our limits though. According to NASA’s Ames Research Center’s expert on humans in space, a person has survived 2x Earth’s gravity for 24 straight hours without ill effects. They go on to claim that it is theoretically possible for a human to adapt to a gravity environment that is between 2x and 3x that of the Earth. However, they say that at 4 times Earth’s gravity (4G) or above, human physiology cannot maintain sufficient blood-flow to the brain. just because something is bigger than the Earth, it doesn’t mean its gravity is going to be the same amount bigger than the Earth because it depends what it’s made of. Jupiter is some 318 times more massive than the Earth is but it doesn’t mean that you would weigh 318 times more on the surface of Jupiter because the radius of Jupiter is about 60000 km compared with Earth’s 6000. And because gravity actually works through a centre of mass, and is proportional to the square of the size of something, then actually you are talking about a mass on the surface of Jupiter actually weighing about 3 times more there than it would on the Earth. So you can’t assume just because something’s bigger that the gravity is going to be that much different at the surface because it would depend what the object is made of and how much its mass is.

WHAT DOES A PLANET NEED TO HAVE LIFE? You already filled this in… 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Fill this in Now 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. But…rank them on what you believe is the most important factor at the top to the least important factor at the bottom you should hopefully have a longer list than yesterday Habitability Information

ON THE PAGE OPPOSITE YOUR LISTS (SO THE LEFT SIDE) Think of your planet from your planet project (yes, I know some of you didn’t do it and received a zero, so pick a random planet) List the factors that a planet needs to be habitable 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Does your planet meet this particular requirement? What would need to happen to that planet to make it habitable for humans? How would you change the planet to create a habitable world?

Left Hand Side

WHAT IS ASTROBIOLOGY? Next Page Right Hand Side Write your own definition down…

https://www.youtube.com/wat ch?v=cuZrQUY5AF4 See if you can find any outdated info as he explains things….

WHAT IS ASTROBIOLOGY? Next Page Right Hand Side Has your definition changed? If so, amend it.

Right hand side… Create an outline similar to this as you read through what Astrobiology is.

FINE. EXTRA CREDIT… Come up and get the “Could you live on Planet Nine” article Read the “Could you live on Planet Nine” article Summarize the “Could you live on Planet Nine” article with 5-6 sentences Test next week!
