PROBABILITY, EVENTS AND OUTCOMES Yo yo yo welcome back!!!!!!!! Happy NEW YEAR! SWBAT: Define probability, event & outcomes Determine the probability of a “favorable” even occurring
2
Ex: …. In the problem above, the experiment is spinning the spinner. Do you agree?! An experiment is a situation involving chance or probability that leads to results called outcomes.
3
The possible outcomes are landing on orange, blue, green or red. An outcome is the result of a single trial of an experiment.
4
One event of this experiment is landing on blue. An event is one or more outcomes of an experiment.
5
The probability of landing on blue is one-fourth. Probability is the measure of how likely an event is.
6
To land on BLUE would be a “favorable” outcome for me. Blue blue blue is my favorite color (presently).
7
Yes, write this down too!! Probability Of An Event P(A) =
8
What’s the probability of landing on yellow? Red? Probability is the measure of how likely an event is.
9
Imagine… A glass jar contains 6 red, 5 green, 8 blue and 3 yellow marbles. If a single marble is chosen at random from the jar, what is the probability of choosing a red marble? a green marble? a blue marble? a yellow marble? What are the possible outcomes?....

Fundamental Counting Principle How many different phone numbers can exist with a 617 area code before a new area code needs to be created?

Exit Ticket 1. Which of the following is an experiment? a.Tossing a coin.c. Choosing a marble from a jar. b.Rolling a single 6-sided died. All of these 2. Which of the following is an outcome? a.Rolling a pair of dicec. Choosing two marbles from a jar b.Landing on red 3. Which of the following experiments does NOT have equally likely outcomes? a.Choose a # at random from 1-7 c. Choose a letter at random from the word SCHOOL b.Toss a coin d. None of these 4. What is the probability of choosing a vowel from the alphabet? 5. A number from 1 - 11 is chosen at random. What is the probability of choosing an odd number?
