AGENDA AGENDA Product overview: Buried Water Ice on Mars NASA Connection: Mars Odyssey Spacecraft Phoenix Mars Mission Featured lesson: Buried water ice on Mars Remote sensing ices on mars Remote sensing with gamma rays NASA Explorer Schools

BURIED WATER ICE ON MARS Middle and high school Physical and Earth science National Science Standards –Structure and properties of matter –Interaction of energy and matter Guided and open inquiry Use real data from Mars Lessons include: Teacher guide, Student guide, Multimedia presentations

Students learn how scientists use remote sensing data to draw conclusions about the physical and chemical nature of planets. LESSONS: Why Follow the Water Remote Sensing Ices on Mars Dirty Ice or Icy Dirt Mars Exploration Debate Dirty Ice Snowcones OBJECTIVE

LESSON IN DETAIL MATERIALS Student Guide (1 per student) Computer with projector or overhead with transparency Computers (extension) Optional: 1 clear pitcher with liquid water and water ice 1 thermometer

OBJECTIVES Compare maps of Mars showing different types of data to characterize the types of ice at the polar regions of Mars during different seasons. Data: –Visible albedo –Surface temperature –Elemental composition

ICE PROPERTIES Phase change Molecular structure Frost point temperature Sublimation BACKGROUND READING

What do you think the white areas are? QUESTION [Answer in chat area]

What is the surface temperature of the ice cap during the winter?

Do you agree or disagree with either or both of the students below? [Use chat] Student 1: I think the ice caps are made of water ice. There is more water ice in the winter when it is colder and less in the summer, just like on Earth. Student 2: I don’t think we can figure out what kind of ice the caps are made of because other ices, like carbon dioxide and methane, are also bright just like water ice.
