Ch.5, Section 1

 Some electrons are found close to the nucleus of an atom  Remember, they have low energy levels Electrons found furthest away from the nucleus are valence electrons. They have the highest energy levels They are held loosely and used for bonding.

 They determine the stability of an atom.  Atoms with 8 valence electrons are the most stable and un-reactive.  They will not form compounds easily. If an atom has less than 8 valence electrons, it will be more reactive. It may give up or take electrons with other elements to become stable.

 A way to model an element’s valence electrons  Includes the element’s symbol & valence electrons

Transition Metals 1-3 valence e-

Sodium (Na) is in Group 1. How many Valence electrons does it have? Draw the dot diagram for Sodium. Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. Draw the dot diagram for Oxygen.

 How many valence e- do the transition metals have? What are valence electrons? The most stable elements have how many valence electrons? What would a dot diagram for carbon look like? How many valence e- does phosphorous have? Calcium? Argon?

 Chapter 5, Section 1 Assessment Questions  Turn Into Google Classroom
