5 In this lesson we will answer the questions: What is an exponent? How can you write large numbers using exponents?

6 Vocabulary exponent - the exponent of a number shows you how many times the number is to be used in a multiplication problem. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. example: 10 2 = 10 × 10 = 100

7 Review: The base ten number system consists of patterns of ten. How can we use this knowledge and exponents to help us write large numbers? First, let’s start small.

8 An exponent is written to the right of a number and looks like it is sitting on the shoulder of the number. this is the exponent 10 2

9 The base is the number that you use as a factor in the multiplication of an exponential equation 10 this is the base 2

10 The exponent tells you how many times you multiply the base times itself. 10 base: 10 exponent: 2 10 x 10 (the base times itself 2 times) 2

11 The exponent tells you how many times you multiply the base times itself. 10 base: exponent: 3

12 The exponent tells you how many times you multiply the base times itself. 10 base: 10 exponent: 3 10 x 10 x 10 3

13 What is the solution to this problem? 10 base: 10 exponent: 3 10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000 Does that match one of the places on our place value chart? 3

14 What do you notice about this equation and its relationship to the place value chart? What about the relationship of the exponent to the number of zeros in the solution? 10 = 1,000 Write your answer in your Math Notebook. 3
