Understanding the Information Technology 4 - Information Technology system is one that processes, stores and transfers information. - Information can take many different forms: words, numbers, pictures, sound, or video. - The basics of IT is simply to help us to improve the way we deal with information in all areas of our live - IT used in business, industry, government, education and health care. - IT systems are very flexible and can be made to perform a variety of different tasks. - IT networks such as the global internet allow us to distribute and share information quickly.

Understanding the Information Technology A computer is: a device that manipulates data according to set of instructions. Three elements are required for a computer to perform useful tasks. Hardware: the pieces of equipment. Software: the instructions that a computer follows. Users: use interface to control the computer system. 5

Types of Computers 6 1- Mainframe : Is a large, powerful computer. 2- Minicomputer: Is smaller, less powerful version of mainframe low processing power and storage capacity.

Types of Computers 7 3- Microcomputer : Is powerful desktop computer, The PC is microcomputer. 4-Network Computer : Is less processing power and storage capacity than microcomputer. It is designed to connect to and be manage by a central computer))Central Computer (Server)

Types of Computers 5- Portable computer Designed to fit inside a briefcase 8

Communications Technology One of the most productive features of IT is the ability to share data between many people very quickly. There are two ways to transfer data between two computers 9

Communications Technology 10 1- Copy data to a removable disk then take the disk to the other computer. 2-Create a network to link the two computers and copy data between them over the network. Transferring data on a disk is much slower than using a network.

Types of Network 11 Local Area network (LAN) :A network to connect the many computers in one area. Wide Area Network(WAN) :A network to connect two or more LANs at different locations. Client-Server Application : Providing centralized data storage and processing for large organization.

Types of Network 12 Remote Access: A remote user, such as someone working from house or a travelling salesman, might need temporary access to the office LAN to copy data from a network to a PC or a laptop computer. Internet :A global network, connecting many different networks.
