Dudley Sargent was placed on the faculty of physical training and then named director of the Hemenway Gymnasium at Harvard University in 1879 Dudley combined other systems into a program of physical education Sargent used Calisthenics, German-and Swedish-style exercises, and specialized machine exercise Dudley was the inventor of gymnasium apparatus; like bars, rings, vaulting horses, ropes, ladders, parallel bars, specialized exercise machines

4. Founded in 1881 in Cambridge, Massachusetts Later became part of Boston University in 1929 Developed exercise machines; pulley systems with adjustable weights Students were able to learn training techniques to strengthen and improve the physical abilities of all people
