3  He was an actor turned politician. He launched his political career as governor of California from 1966 to 1974  March 30 1981 a gunman shot the president as he was leaving Washington hotel and collapsed his left lung  12 days after the attack he walked out of the hospital and returned to work

4  The economic policies put forth by the administration of President Ronald Reagan, especially as emphasizing supply-side theory.  “During the 1980 campaign, a new term, supply-side economics, came into vogue. People said I embraced this theory, and several economists claimed credit for inventing its principles which they said I had then adopted as the basis for my economic recovery program.” –Ronald Regan

5 Reagan’s main focus during his presidency was on the economy, his plan was to:  Reduce growth of government spending  Reduce marginal tax rates on income  Reduce regulation  Control the money supply to reduce inflation  “The most immediate priority was dealing with double-digit inflation, high unemployment, and a prime interest rate of 21.5 percent, the highest since the Civil War”- Ronald Regan

7  In August 1981, President Reagan signed the Economic Recovery Tax Act  Trade reached record high 152 billion in 1987

8  Ronald Reagan is very anti-communist.  He is thought to be the man who ended communism.  “How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.” –Ronald Reagan

9  Reagan believed that if he could persuade the Soviets to allow for more democracy and free speech, this would lead to reform and the end of Communism. Speaking at the Berlin Wall on June 12, 1987, Reagan challenged Gorbachev to go further, saying: "General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

10  Soviets were prepared to commit any crime he characterized the soviets as forces of evil in the modern world  Enormously expanded military capabilities he could threaten the soviets with a new round arms race  March 1983 when he announced to pursue high technology missile defense these prevented salvation from the nuclear war  Emphasized defense rather then offense  Imposed economic sanctions in Poland and the USSR

11  1983 negotiations with the soviets were broken off and the soviets boycotted the Olympic games  Won the republican vote in 1984  In December 1987 the INF treaty was signed, banning all intermediate range missiles from Europe  There were 4 meetings at the summit
