1 UNFAMILIAR GENRE PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS ON NAVIGATING

2 WHY TEACH WITH MULTI -GENRE 1.The integration and connection of reading and writing 2. Exposure to multiple types of writing with real-world connections 3.Students understanding of the value of writing processes' 5.Students have the ability to place value on different types of writing 6. It answers the question, “When will I use this in real-life?”

3 WHY THE UNFAMILIAR GENRE PROJECT 1.It eliminates stereotypes of “good writer vs. bad writer” 2.It demystifies writing and builds confidence 3.Sharpens metacognitive skills 4.Opens up the writing process on multiple levels

4 YOUR ASSIGNMENT – PART 1 Picking a genre (see page 65-66 in Writing Outside Your Comfort Zone ) Make sure to choose a genre that will challenge you, one you have never done before. Choose a genre that has an abundance of research materials available. Don’t make things hard on yourself by choosing something you will have a problem researching. Choose a topic where applicable EMAIL ME A PARAGRAPH ON WHAT GENRE YOU ARE CHOOSING AND WHY YOU ARE CHOOSING THAT PARTICULAR GENRE- DUE SUNDAY APRIL 6 TH AT 5:00 PM. You can find an example of a proposal on page 85 of WOYCZ

5 YOUR ASSIGNMENT- PART 2 Create an electronic research journal that has a minimum of 15 entries. See pg. 76-80 in Writing Outside Your Comfort Zone for examples. Include date on each entry in electronic journal. Each entry should be a minimum of two paragraphs. The Electronic Research Journal will be included in your final submission

6 YOUR ASSIGNMENT- PART 3 Research and read your unfamiliar genre. Collect the best 5-10 samples of published work in the genre of your choice ( no less than 5, but it is encouraged to do more than 5) Take notes on writers, craft, structure and unique strategies in each piece. Examples can be found on pages 86-87 of WOYCZ Create an annotated bibliography listing each of these models along with annotation for each. Examples of an annotated bibliography can be found on pages 95-99 of WOYCZ

7 YOUR ASSIGNMENT- PART 4 Create a “How to Book” on your selected genre Think about content, craft, audience, voice, purpose of your genre Use step by step details. Someone should be able to take your book and create your genre just by looking at the book. Highlight the distinctive qualities of your UGP

8 YOUR ASSIGNMENT- PART 5 Draft a centerpiece example of your UGP Multiple drafts and edits should be evident Keep everything, notes, questions, inquiry to submit with your final assignment. Submit your best s and final draft

9 YOUR ASSIGNMENT- PART 6 Reflecting on your experience in a letter An example can be found on pages 106-107 of WOYCZ Reflect on the overall experience. Discuss your challenges and triumphs. Use your electronic journal and other materials for inspiration.

10 FINAL SUBMISSION Submit in the following order by SUNDAY APRIL 27 TH AT 5:00 PM 1.Your electronic journal 2.Examples of published works 5-10 3.Annotated Bibliography 4.How to book 5.Your centerpiece writing example drafts and notes 6.Your centerpiece writing, flawless 7.Your reflection letter

11 IMPORTANT DUE DATES PROPOSAL DUE SUNDAY APRIL 6 TH AT 5:00 PM- EMAILED FINAL PROJECT BINDER DUE SUNDAY APRIL 27 TH AT 5:00 PM- POSTED TO THE DISUCSSION BOARD IN ONE FILE NO LATE ASSIGMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED
