How To Use MrV’s Sums Table - For Subtraction Terminology Review: 17 – 9 = 8 Minuend – Subtrahend = Difference

For Subtraction: Each Cell holds 3 numbers: - The Minuend is the big number. - The little numbers are the Subtrahend and Difference Min – Sub = Diff Using the Sums Table for Subtraction: In this Cell, the Sum is 14 and the Addends are 8 + 6. For Addition: Each Cell holds 3 numbers: The Sum (big number) and its 2 Addends This Cell defines two different subtractions: 14 – 8 = 6 and 14 – 6 = 8

Let’s Look at One Cell Borrowing: Have you noticed that Borrowing always results in a number from 10 to 18? / If you are unclear on these subtractions, you can use the table to find them quickly: -For 15 – 7 use the 7 th row to look for a big 15 -The second addend 8 is the difference -So: 15 – 7 = 8 You can also look along the diagonal of “teen” minuends to find the subtrahend. The other addend is always the difference. Try 15 – 9 … There are two places to find the answer, the 6 th row or 9 th row So: 15 – 9 = 6 / / /

15 – 7 =? 1. Find the Row that matches the Subtrahend 2. Look across the Row until you see the Minuend (It’s the big number) 3. The 2 nd addend below it is the difference 8 Subtracting a 1-digit Number 15 In this case, it’s Row 7: In this case, it’s 15 15 minus 7 is 8

Ok, let’s try a few: Click when you find the Sum 14 – 8 = 17 – 9 = 10 – 4 = 13 – 6 = 14 6 17 8 10 6 13 7
