Math Menus With Jessica Muonio AIS Egypt –West Campus BS Elementary Education, MA Mathematics Education

Foldables Notes All from Dinah Zike www.dinah.com Easy to make First time… Connect ideas

Research Students need time in small groups. Most improvement happened when groups were changed DAILY (Walls, 2004). Students learn more when it’s more about the reasoning and thinking than the “right” answer (Yackel and Cobb, 1996). Teachers accepting ALL answers doesn’t lead to understanding. Teachers should (Lubienski, 2004) Facilitate situations for students to share and elaborate on ideas Expand the boundaries of exploration Make connections among different concepts and interrelationships Invite multiple representations

How do we do that? Marilyn Burns and Math Solutions www.mathsolutions.com @Math_Solutions Books, workshops, ideas Elementary Try it today! Run this session similar to my math classroom

Warm Up/Appetizer Review skills Math Facts Timed Test or Flashcards Board Work Catch Up on Yesterday Similar Objectives Math Fact Practice

Whole Group Activity Constructivist Approach Von Glaserfield (1990) – Students don’t acquire knowledge because we pass it to them; knowledge is active and based on experiences with mathematics; writing out an algorithm doesn’t equate understanding. Hands-on activities Doesn’t have to be manipulatives, many activities use pencil and paper Explore the math and the WHY More than one approach and way into the mathematics

Halving Squares Math Solutions Teaching Arithmetic, Lessons for Introducing Fractions How it works… Start together Solve on own Share solutions

Small Groups Data from tests, assignments, journals, exit slips Focus on last objective Reteach Options for Logistics Rotations ½ and ½ math Pull Outs

Work Out or Main Course Options! Today’s objective and any related previous objective Some activities take more than a day Students can go back and find more pathways Journal Writing about math adds to understanding Mathematical meaning must be shared; symbols, text are ambiguous and need to be negotiated; leads to DISCOURSE! (Voigt, 1994) What about when they’re done?

Cool Down/Desserts Choice Time! Related games IXL or other computer practice Flashcards Task Cards SCOOT or I Have…Who Has?

Wrap Up Last 5-10 minutes of class Check over work Share solutions or pathways Share journal entries Exit slips to make groups for next time NOT ALL IN ONE DAY Maybe 2

Examples

My Board Group 1 = Red, Orange, Yellow Group 1 = Green, Blue, Purple Tasks Multiplication Facts Journal Prompt (How many different ways can you make ½?) Halving Squares Math Menu

My Board Appetizer – Multiplication Facts Timed Drill Main Course Ways to Show ½ Halving Squares (add to our board!) Journal Prompt Dessert – Math Menu (Fraction Top It, Cover Up, Uncover)

Questions? How can this work for you? What benefits do you see? What logistical nightmares are there? Will there be time? Any other ways I can help? jmuonio@aiswest.com @JessMuonio (Twitter)
