2 Painting with Participles Participles = evoke action A participle is an ing verb placed at the beginning or the end of a sentence. Hissing, slithering, and coiling, the diamondback snake attacked its prey. The diamondback snake attacked its prey hissing, slithering, and coiling. -----Hissing, slithering, coiling = participles-----

3 Adding Participle Phrases Imagine what this would look like: Hissing its forked red tongue and coiling its cold body, the diamondback snake attacked its prey. Participle Phrases = hissing its forked red tongue coiling its cold body

7 Example Sentences: Killing the puny rat and digesting its warm body, the diamond back snake had a delicious lunch. Unhinging its jaw and swallowing the savory rodent, the snake enjoyed dinner. Surviving in nature, killing the rodent, swallowing its warm body, the snake devoured its meal. Squeezing its scaly body and sinking its sharp fangs into the mouse, the snake ate its meal.

8 PARTICIPLES Instructions: Take the following stems and working with a partner, create some participle/participial phrases. 1. Melody froze. 2. The Olympic long jumper thrust the weight of his whole body forward. 3. The clown smiled. 4. The rhino looked for freedom. 5. I glanced at my clock. 6. The kitten yawned.

9 PARTICIPLES Instructions: Take the following stems and working with a partner, create some participle/participial phrases. 1. Standing in front of the audience, Melody froze from fright. 2.Running the length of the pit, the Olympic long jumper thrust the weight of his whole body forward 3. Scaring the small child, the clown smiled eerily. 4. Lumbering from the hunters, the rhino looked for freedom. 5. Waking up from a deep sleep, I glanced at my clock. 6. Curling up in a ball, the kitten yawned.
