5 The Night Sky Friday, August 12 · The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks late tonight, but the light of the practically full Moon fills the sky for the entire night and will hide all but the brightest meteors. See our article, Off Year for the Perseid Meteor Shower. At least you can look forward to next year, when the Moon will be just a waning crescent.Off Year for the Perseid Meteor Shower Saturday, August 13 · Full Moon (exact at 2:57 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time). The Moon is between dim Aquarius and Capricornus. Sunday, August 14 · By about 10 p.m. now, depending on how far east or west you live in your time zone, Cassiopeia rises as high in the northeast as the Big Dipper (shown below) has sunk in the northwest. Look midway between them and a little higher for Polaris, due north. Monday, August 15 · This is also the time of year when Vega crosses highest overhead soon after nightfall. Whenever you see Vega passing the zenith, you know the Sagittarius Teapot and the rich Sagittarius Milky Way are at their highest in the south — full of deep-sky objects awaiting view in binoculars or a telescope.
