Learning Styles

Numbers The numbers indicate how strongly you prefer one learning style over another. A 1 or 3 means you are pretty well balanced and don’t have a strong preference. A 5 or 7 means your preference can effect how well you learn A 9 or 11 means that you have a very strong preference which makes it hard for you to learn when that style is not met.

ACT = Active You need to do something with the knowledge you learn right away Tips: 1.Study in a group and takes turns explaining the material to each other 2.Discuss in the group what questions you think might be on the next test.

REF = Reflective You need to think about material that you just learned before you can do something with it. Tips: 1.When reading, stop periodically to reflect on what you just learned. 2.Right summaries of the class material in your own words.

SEN = Sensing Focus more on details and like learning facts. You also need to see the connection to the real world Tips: 1)Ask your teacher for real world examples when they are not provided 2)Brainstorm with your friends ways you could apply what you are learning.

INT = Intuitive You prefer to discover relationships and hate memorizing things Tips: 1)You need to make sure to check your work 2)Always go back and reread questions to make sure you answered correctly because you tend to miss little details

VIS = Visual You remember best when you see an image Tips: 1)Find diagrams that go with the material you are learning if your teacher does not give you any. 2)Color code your notes 3)Look on YouTube for videos on the topic while studying

VER = Verbal You get more out of written and spoken words Tips: 1)Write summaries and outlines of the material in your own words. 2)Working in groups is helpful to you.

SEQ = Sequential Follow logical step-wise paths when solving a problem Tips: 1)Outline course material while studying in logical order 2)Try to relate a new topic to something you already know to strengthen your global thinking skills

GLO = Global All at once you will suddenly “get” a concept after you understand the big picture Tips: 1)Before reading a chapter, skim through to get an overview (gives you context for what you are learning) 2)Devote large blocks of time to each subject you are studying, instead of doing just a little of each subject at a time
