The Family & the Home Lesson 9: Discipline in the Home

Where is Discipline Needed?  Discipline in ourselves (1 Cor. 9:24-27)  Discipline in the home (Eph. 6:1-4)  Discipline the Lord’s church (1 Cor. 5:1-13)  Discipline in society (Rom. 13:1-7)

Parental Discipline (Proverbs 22:6)  "Train up" – proper conduct is not automatic; it is the duty of the parents to teach it (Eph. 6:1-4)  "A child" – you must start early  "In the way he should go" – there is a proper way to live according to God’s word  "And when he is old" – we take with us what we were taught in childhood

Discipline = Training What is discipline?  Discipline is teaching and training (instruction) that corrects in order to develop self-control and godly character (note the word “disciple”, a learner, in “discipline”)  The Heb. word musar translated “chasten” means discipline – see Prov. 1:3, 8; 3:11; 4:1; 5:12, 23; 6:23; 7:22; etc. (comp. Deut. 8:5)

Discipline = Training What is discipline?  The Gr. word paideia translated “chasten” means discipline (lit. the rearing of children) – see Eph. 6:4; 2 Tim. 3:16; Heb. 12:5, 7, 8, 11

Hebrews 12:5-11 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “M Y SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE L ORD, N OR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY H IM ; 6 F OR THOSE WHOM THE L ORD LOVES H E DISCIPLINES, A ND H E SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM H E RECEIVES.” 7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. 11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. (New American Standard Version)

Two Types of Discipline  There are two types of discipline: Instructive (teaching, preventative in nature) Corrective (correcting, penalizing in nature

The Goal of Discipline  Instructive discipline – teaching with words, both positive and negative reinforcement (Prov. 1:8; 3:11-12)  Corrective discipline – spanking (Prov. 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15,17,19)  Self-discipline – the goal of teaching and spanking early on is to develop self-control and godly character later in life (Prov. 20:11; 22:6)

Qualities of Biblical Discipline Loving & diligent Timely & controlled Appropriate & corrective Painful & saving Educational & rewarding Prov. 13:24- - - Prov. 19:18- - - Prov. 22:15- - - Prov. 23:13-14- - - Prov. 29:15,17- - -

The Goal of Discipline Note four important words in these Proverbs: 1. "rod" (use something other than your hand) 2. "beat" (pain without abuse; 19:18b in KJV) 3. "chasten" (instruct, correction, wisdom) 4. "reproof" (calmly explain why they are getting a spanking)

Review Questions 1. Where is discipline needed? 2. What does the word “discipline” mean? 3. What are two kinds of discipline? 4. What is the goal of discipline? 5. What do we learn from the Proverbs concerning corrective discipline (spanking)?
