The Problem A local cabinet/ furniture manufacturer is looking for a way to add value to their daily scrap. The company disposes of thousands of wooden cubes each week that measure approximately ¾”. Our job is to come up with a way to use these scrap pieces in a productive manner.

Brainstorm Puzzle Pen or pencil holder Potpurri Paper weight Building blocks for kids After discussing which one was best we decided to go with the puzzle because it was the most unique and probably the most profitable.

Constraints 27 ¾” hardwood cubes. 5 puzzle pieces. At least 3, but no more than 6 cubes that are permanently attached to each other. No 2 puzzle pieces can be the same. The 5 puzzle pieces must assemble to form a 2 ¼” cube. Some pieces should interlock.

Alternative Solutions

The Proposed Solution  Overall we went with Samantha Wilburn’s puzzle design because it was a more complex design that worked well with the interlocking theme.

The Model

Evaluation of the Solution The original design was too complex It would take too long to make. Paint design was too expensive

Refine the design We decided to go with Alan Reed’s design The paint scheme doesn’t cost as much It would be less time consuming

The Final Design

Results Our target age group is 6 and up The simpler paint design will appeal to the smaller children without sending them into sensory overload.
