2 Concepts that are going to be covered Order of operations Two step equations proportions & ratios

3 Order of operations A common technique for remembering the order of operations is the abbreviation “PEMDAS” It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, and Addition and Subtraction". This tells you the ranks of the operations Example 1: Evaluate 3 + 6 x (5 + 4) ÷ 3 - 7 using the order of operations. Step 1: 3 + 6 x (5 + 4) ÷ 3 - 7 = 3 + 6 x 9 ÷ 3 – 7 ( Parentheses ) Step 2: 3 + 6 x 9 ÷ 3 - 7 = 3 + 54 ÷ 3 - 7 ( Multiplication ) Step 3: 3 + 54 ÷ 3 - 7 = 3 + 18 – 7 (Division ) Step 4: 3 + 18 - 7 = 21 – 7 (Addition ) Step 5: 21 - 7 = 14 (Subtraction )

4 Proportions & ratios  A ratio is a relationship between two values  A proportion can be used to solve problems involving ratios  To solve a proportion like this, we have to cross-multiply. This process involves multiplying the two extremes and then comparing that product with the product of the means.  Proportions are built from ratios. A "ratio" is just a comparison between two different things. For instance, someone can look at a group of people, count noses, and refer to the "ratio of men to women" in the group. Suppose there are thirty-five people, fifteen of whom are men. Then the ratio of men to women is 15 to 20.

5 Two step equations Solving a two-step equation requires the same procedure(s) as a one-step equation. o Get the variable term by itself. The variable term is the letter and whatever coefficient is in front of it o Bring down the variable term. Rewrite the equation with the additive inverse action performed. o Eliminate the variable's coefficient. "Coefficient" is the proper word for the number attached to the variable. o Calculate the result o Label the answer, if necessary
