3 f September 26, 20073HINS R&D HINS Motivation and Mission Motivation – –Demonstration and study of novel and un-tested technologies for a non-relativistic Linac to advance the High Beam Power Frontier for neutrino science and future HEP programs Mission – –Accomplish the R&D necessary to establish technical credibility and cost basis for a Linac front-end by ~2010

4 f September 26, 20074HINS R&D Key Issues Addressed by HINS R&D Use of a single high power klystron to drive multiple accelerating cavities with individual high power vector modulators for amplitude and phase control –OBJECTIVE  RF cost savings Performance of a focusing lattice comprised of superconducting solenoids to form axially-symmetric beam –OBJECTIVE  control of emittance growth and beam loss Use of superconducting spoke resonator RF structures for beam acceleration starting at 10 MeV –OBJECTIVE  RF cost savings High-speed (nanosecond) beam chopping at 2.5 MeV –OBJECTIVE  beam loss control in Linac and subsequent synchrotrons Evaluation of the overall performance of a Linac based on these design concepts and the resulting beam quality up to 60 MeV

5 f September 26, 20075HINS R&D The HINS R&D Plan Install a 2.5 MW, 325 MHz klystron RF power system Equip and operate a 325 MHz high power RF component test facility and cavity test cave Fabricate and install a cryostat for testing 325 MHz SC spoke cavities with pulsed high-power RF Assemble a 50 KeV ion source and 2.5 MeV RFQ injector Build a 10 MeV room temperature Linac with SC solenoidal beam focusing and vector modulator RF control; operate with beam to verify performance Add three 325 MHz SC spoke resonator cryomodules and operate with beam to 60 MeV This all adds up to building a one-of-a-kind superconducting 60 MeV H- linac

7 f September 26, 20077HINS R&D HINS R&D Scope – Budget and Manpower HINS FY07 Costs –M&S (w/OH)- $2.5M –Labor (w/OH) - $6.1M –Manpower Total ~25 FTEs –Technical Division: 15 FTE –Accelerator Division plus Accelerator Physics Center: 10 FTE Plans for FY08 are similar –M&S (w/OH) – 3.2 M$ –Labor (w/OH) – 4.3 M$ (~18 FTEs) –Labor tight but not inconsistent with FY08 goals The manpower represents a broad spectrum of skills from technician and designer to engineer and scientist, including one post-doc and one graduate student

8 f September 26, 20078HINS R&D Status Overview Design and Fabrication –Accelerator physics design effort continues –RFQ will be delivered from industry by the end of 2007 –High speed pulser for beam chopper is being prototyped –Designs of the 16 room temperature cavities are nearly complete; cavity 1 is on hand, cavities 2-4 are in fabrication –Superconducting solenoid design for room temperature cavity section is complete and procurement is underway –RF vector modulator design is complete and components for room temperature section modulators are on hand –First SC spoke cavity has been fabricated; second is 80% fabricated; two more are beginning fabrication in India –SC cavity test cryostat design is nearly complete and procurement activities have begun

9 f September 26, 20079HINS R&D Status Overview Facilities –Meson Detector Building is being outfitted to accommodate necessary HINS facilities Testing and Operations –325 MHz 2.5 MW klystron has been commissioned –A proton ion source is under test and will soon be moved to Meson Building; efforts on H- ion source proceed in parallel –First room temperature spoke cavity has been conditioned to full design RF power –Vector modulator control of RF amplitude and phase has been demonstrated at 6 kW with the cavity –Preparations are underway for full gradient, low-power CW test of first SC spoke cavity in ILC-VTS cryostat

17 f September 26, 200717HINS R&D Superconducting Spoke Cavities First SC spoke cavity fabrication has been received from Zanon Second cavity is currently in fabrication at Roark Fabrication of two additional cavities is beginning in India

18 f September 26, 200718HINS R&D Superconducting Spoke Cavities Test cryostat for full pulsed power testing –Cryostat vacuum vessel is in procurement Plans are proceeding for full voltage CW test of first SC spoke cavity in Fermilab ILC Vertical Test Stand –Mechanical components are designed and mostly on hand –1.3 GHz  325 MHz frequency converters are designed and being assembled to take full advantage of the existing VTS control and data acquisition systems –200 watt CW 325 MHz amplifier is ordered Preparations are underway for cavity to be BCP’ed at ANL 4 SSR under production and expected by mid-08 (9 are needed for first cryomodule in Meson)

19 f September 26, 200719HINS R&D Important Next Steps First SC spoke cavity processing and vertical test at full gradient with low power CW RF Procurement and installation of SC spoke cavity test cryostat for full pulsed power testing RFQ installation, conditioning, coupling with ion source and 2.5 MeV beam acceleration Demonstration of planned RF distribution scheme and simultaneous control of RF amplitude & phase for multiple cavities with vector modulators Construction of Linac cave in Meson

20 f September 26, 200720HINS R&D Summary HINS R&D program is very active and making good progress –325 MHz RF system is operational –First room temperature spoke cavity has been fully conditioned with RF power and vector modulator control has been demonstrated –Expect full gradient test of first superconducting spoke cavity in ILC- VTS this year –Plan to achieve 2.5 MeV beam in early 2008 and RT Linac during the course of the year. Scope and resources of HINS R&D program may be re- assessed in the context of Project X and future High Intensity Frontier plans at FNAL
