Chapter 23

Genesis 1: 1-2 In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water. (Present at Creation) 1 Sam 16:13 So Samuel took the container of olive oil and poured it on Jesse’s youngest son to appoint him in front of his brothers. From that day on, the L ORD ’s Spirit worked in David. Is 11:2 The Spirit of the L ORD will rest upon that king. The Spirit will give him wisdom and understanding, guidance and power. The Spirit will teach him to know and respect the L ORD. (At work in the Old Testament, helping the kings of Israel) Luke 1:35 The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you. For this reason the baby will be holy and will be called the Son of God. (Jesus was conceived through the Holy Spirit) WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Matthew 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven opened, and he saw God’s Spirit coming down on him like a dove. (Worked with Jesus as he began his ministry) John 15:26 “I will send you the Helper from the Father; he is the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father. When he comes, he will tell about me,… (Jesus prepares for His coming) John 20:22 After he said this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. (special gift to the apostles to help them in their ministry) Acts 2:3-4 They saw something like flames of fire that were separated and stood over each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages by the power the Holy Spirit was giving them. (The Holy Spirit comes to the Church…and works through it for all time)

At Baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit. He brings his gifts to us: Wisdom—the ability to see things as God does Understanding—the ability to understand the truth in the Catholic Faith Counsel—the ability to make good and moral decisions Knowledge—to know and judge from the viewpoint of eternity Piety—to love God and serve Him faithfully Fortitude—To bear witness to God, even when it is difficult Fear (Awe) of the Lord—to have a wonder of God; to know who God is and to know who we are in relation to him At Confirmation, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are strengthened within us. TEMPLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

How should we act toward one another? We should act in charity…recognizing God in the other person. How should we feel about this gift? We have been given a great dignity and we should live up to it by not sinning. How should we treat our bodies? We must take care of our health, what we eat, how we exercise, how we practice hygiene, so that show that we value our life. What does sin do to us as temples of the Holy Spirit? Mortal sin tells the Holy Spirit to leave our temple. What does the Holy Spirit do in our soul? He brings us grace and guides us to be holy. AS A TEMPLE…

THE APOLSTLES AND MARY PREPARED FOR THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT—PRAYING FOR NINE DAYS A novena is a particular kind of prayer that lasts for nine days. There are many different kinds of novenas—asking different saints to pray for our needs and intentions. NOVENA

Pentecost is called the birthday of the Church—the Holy Spirit came and brought her life. 3000 men were baptized on that day—and the mission of continuing Jesus’ work had begun. The Holy Spirit gave the apostles a special gift—to speak in tongues. This meant they could preach to all nations. This was a reversal of the chaos caused when the people could no longer understand each other at the tower of Babel. Before Pentecost the apostles were fearful, scared, not understanding the teachings of Jesus even though they were his followers. Now, the apostles were brave, preaching fearlessly, understanding and sharing Scripture, converting many to believe in Jesus THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH

The Sanctifier—the one who makes us holy The Counselor—the one who defends/guides us in truth The Spirit of Truth—he who protects us from error The Giver of Life—he who brings life to the Church and grace to our souls Comforter—he who restores joy and peace Paraclete—our advocate and support TITLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Third Person of the Holy Trinity…GOD…equal to the Father and the Son He has spoken through the prophets He has the divine attributes (eternal, all powerful, all knowing, all good, etc) HE IS THE LOVE between the Father and the Son He is the sanctifier—guiding us and making us holy He gives life to the Church He is active in the Sacraments He brings life and grace to our souls He helps to form us into the image of God WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

As seen in art—The Holy Spirit is fire, light, the hand (or finger) of God, dove, wind, cloud… SYMBOLS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Papal infallibility—keeps the Church free from error in teachings of faith and morals Through our bishops—who teach and govern the diocese Through our priests—active in the Sacraments, bringing us to an encounter with Jesus Through us—receiving the Sacraments In the Church—spreading the gospel By prompting us to pray, to do good works, to do penance Leading us to become Saints HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDE THE CHURCH TODAY?
