2 Germany: Immigration in Transition Germany has an ongoing need for immigrants to bolster economic development and to maintain a dynamic workforce. An immigration law passed both houses of the German parliament and was signed by the president in March 2002. The law took affect in January of 2005. This set the stage for how Germany will deal with labor migration, newcomers, and resident migrants in the years to come.

Germans sailed to New York to start fresh and settled in the colony of Newburg along the Hudson river. word spread back to German that American lands where very fertile. That made more and more Germans come to New York. They settled in colonies in New Jersey, Maryland, and then to Germanna in Virginia. The Indian attacks made the Germans build bigger communities and move into cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore.

6 By 1854 New York became the main port of entry for Germans. By 1854 a ¼ of a million Germans had arrived In America. In 1870 the German empire was born from A of states and kingdoms. Germans would leave again because of war and growing taxes. The immigration began in 1880 with 200,000 leaving. Swiss- Germans began leaving in large # starting in 1881-1888.

7 Germany was mainly a country of emigration in the 19 th century and the 1 st half of the 20 th century. Since the 1950s Germany has been an important European destination for migrants. The issue of immigrant integration has also become highly topical in recent years. The September 11, 2001 attacks brought ? about of security and the integration of Muslim immigrants.
