2 Anton van Leeuwenhoek created one of the first microscopes Allowed him to look at water and bacteria in his mouth, which he called “animalcules” In 1665, Robert Hooke looked at pieces of cork and saw tiny boxes that he called “cells”

5 The cell theory says: 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. A cell is the smallest unit of life and provides structure and function in living things. 3. New cells come from existing cells.

6 There are 2 main kinds of cells: 1. Eukaryotic – cells that have a nucleus (plants and animals) 2. Prokaryotic – cells that do not have a nucleus (bacteria and archaea) Nucleus – holds a cell’s DNA (genetic material)
