Lab 21Date: Cupric Oxide from Cupric Sulfate Purpose Compare the experimental and calculated amounts of CuO produced in a rxn. Background CuSO 4 (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) → Na 2 SO 4 (aq) + Cu(OH) 2 (s) heat Cu(OH) 2 (s) → CuO (s) + H 2 O We will measure how much of this is produced.

Pre-Lab Questions - 1. Calculate the formula mass of CuSO 4  5H 2 O and CuO CuSO 4 ∙5H 2 O (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) → CuO + 6H 2 O + Na 2 SO 4 2. Calculate the mass of CuO that would be produced if 0.30 grams of CuSO 4  5H 2 O reacted with an excess amount of NaOH. 0.30 gexcess how much?

Experiment - Mass 0.30 g of CuSO 4 ∙5H 2 O in a clean and dry 100mL beaker. Dissolve solid in about 25 mL of purified water. Pipet 2.0 mL of NaOH solution into the beaker. Heat beaker gently until black CuO is completely formed.

Mass of filter paper = _________g. Filter the solution. Mass of dry filter paper with CuO = _____________ g. Remove filter paper from funnel and let filter paper dry overnight.

Analysis - 1.Calculate the experimental mass of CuO precipitate formed on the filter paper. 2. Calculate the percent yield of your reaction using the formula. Results -
