Chapter 5: Physical Activity & Weight Management Lesson 2: The Circulatory System

BELL ACTIVITY – 10/27 BLOOD – What comes to mind when you see this word?

Transporting Materials Through the Body – p. 123 Part of being fit involves having a healthy circulatory system. The circulatory system is the group of organs and tissues that transport essential materials to body cells and remove their waste products. Consists of: heart, the blood vessels, and the blood itself.

Another name for it… The cardiovascular system is another name for the circulatory system. Cardio refers to the heart Vascular refers to vessels Welcome to Discovery Education Player

The three types of blood vessels – p. 123 The heart pumps blood into the arteries. Arteries – blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to all parts of the body. Capillaries – smallest blood vessels, which provide body cells with blood and connect arteries with veins. Veins – blood vessels that carry blood from all parts of the body back to the heart.

Blood Pressure Blood pressure – the force pushing against the walls of the blood vessels. A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers, usually written in this way: 120/80. The first number is the pressure at its highest point, when the heart contracts and forces blood into the arteries. The second number is the lowest point of pressure, when the heart relaxes to refill with blood.

Blood Types Not all blood is the same. 4 types: A, B, AB, and O They are classified according to the type of red blood cells they contain. Some can be mixed, while others cannot. When blood types that are not compatible are mixed, the chemicals in one type of blood clump together and block the blood vessels.

Blood Types Compatibility, Fig 5.6, p. 126

Closing What does the circulatory system do? List and define the 3 types of blood vessels.
