2 Political Revolutions Review 2 The Enlightenment The American Revolution The French Revolution The Reign of Terror Napoleon The Haitian Revolution 1) Philosophers such as John Locke challenge the relationship between man and his government. 2) The ideas of Natural Rights such as life, liberty and property and the rights to representation in government is created.

3 Political Revolutions Review 3 The Enlightenment The American Revolution The French Revolution The Reign of Terror Napoleon The Haitian Revolution Leaders such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson rebel against Britain demanding their Natural Rights of life, liberty, property and representation in government. The revolutionaries defeat Britain and establish a democratic republic based upon the writings of Locke, and the Enlgihtenment

The French people are already suffering from high taxes and a lack of rights. The 3 rd Estate (The Common People) refuses to agree to the tax increase and instead rebels creating the National Assembly and the Declaration of the Rights of Man based upon the ideals of the Enlightenment..

5 Political Revolutions Review 5 The Enlightenment The American Revolution The French Revolution The Reign of Terror Napoleon The Haitian Revolution The Reign of Terror was the radical phase of the French Revolution when Robespierre seized power and tried to science all who disagreed with him. In the end Robespierre succeeded in killing thousands and creating chaos throughout France.

6 Political Revolutions Review 6 The Enlightenment The American Revolution The French Revolution The Reign of Terror Napoleon The Haitian Revolution Napoleon, a popular General, is able to seize power in France by offering stability to France following the chaos of the Reign of Terror. Napoleon includes some of the goals of the Revolution in his laws called the Napoleonic Code, however he does away with some of the others concluding by crowning himself Emperor. Napoleon is defeated by a coalition of armies from across Europe and a lasting peace is negotiated at the Congress of Vienna by restoring the monarchies and balancing the power.

7 Political Revolutions Review 7 The Enlightenment The American Revolution The French Revolution The Reign of Terror Napoleon The Haitian Revolution 1)Learning of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, Toussaint L’Ouverture leads a slave revolt in Haiti. 2)Toussaint establishes a government based upon the Declaration of the Rights of Man 3)Wanting control of the Haiti’s sugar crop, Napoleon sends an army to capture Toussaint. 4)Following the example of the American and French Revolutions Haiti becomes the world’s 3 rd republic. 9 The American Revolution Political Revolution: American colonists successfully change their government gaining representation and rights. Next

10 The French Revolution Political Revolution: Angry French citizens overthrow King Louis demanding a voice in their government. Next

11 The Reign of Terror Political Revolution: French Revolution goes out of control as Robespierre and the radicals seize power. Next

12 Napoleon Political Coup, Napoleon takes control of France promising the restore order and stability, but in the end he is defeated and the rule of the Kings is returned (If I could turn back time…). Next

13 The Haitian Revolution Political Revolution: Based upon the success of the French and American Revolutions, Haiti becomes only the 2 nd country in the world to successfully end colonial rule.
